The 1/10 Troy ounce gold Britannia coins each contain one-tenth ounce of gold and has a face value of ten pounds sterling. The Royal Mint first introduced the Brittania coin to Britain in 1987, making it Europe’s first gold coin in Europe. The British government has kept the circulation of the Britannia deliberately low in order to create shortage. Each year only hundred and fifty thousand gold Britannia coins are brought on to the market therefore increasing the coin’s value considerably.
Design
Until the year 2000 the coin always featured the image of Britannia on its face. Since 2001 a different design has been used in odd years. The reverse of the 1/10 Troy ounce coin shows a portrait Elizabeth II, the head of state of Great Britain.
