Precious metal is prone to damage

By now, gold and silver buyers know: precious metals are delicate. But how come? Well, due to the soft properties of pure gold and pure silver, physical precious metal products can damage easily. This damage can range anywhere from light scratches to unsightly dents if accidentally dropped. In addition, these products are susceptible to fingerprints that you cannot simply wipe off. Prevention is better than cure, so it is wise to choose the right accessories for your coin or bar. When making your purchase in our webshop, each product page indicates whether a coin is delivered in a case or capsule.

How do I protect my coins?

When you buy silver coins, this often means either choosing to purchase different individual coins or buying several copies of the same coin type. Some silver coins already come in a mint-issued plastic capsule, otherwise they are sold by tube, which usually contains twenty or twenty-five pieces. If you want to divide this investment individually, you can buy a coin cover to keep each coin free of dust and scratches. The same principle applies to buying gold coins, only the sizes and contents of the tubes are smaller than with silver variants.

Buy coin capsules and coin covers

We offer a wide range of coin covers and capsules in various sizes. Coin cases are ideal for storing individual coins, while coin capsules provide superb protection and are designed to fit specific types of coins. The product description clearly states which capsules are suited to which particular type of coin. Many popular coins, such as the silver Maple Leaf, American Eagle and Vienna Philharmonic, can also be stored in tubes that offer space to 20 or 25 coins at a time.

This is how to pick up a precious metal coin…

You probably have a number of beautiful investment or collector coins in your possession. Therefore, it is not surprising that you may want to admire them from time to time, however it is advisable to do this as little as possible. Handling your coins comes with the risk of damaging them. If you do need to pick them up, take note of the following:

STEP 1 - Cover hard surfaces, such as a table, with something soft, for instance a clean towel or cloth. Also, put something soft on the floor in case you drop coin.

STEP 2 - Use only cotton jeweller's gloves. Cleaning and latex gloves can damage precious metals. If using bare hands, clean them first with disinfectant to remove oils from your skin.

STEP 3 - Hold your coin by the edges only. Do this carefully. Never rub the surface of your coin with your fingers. You do not have to clean coins, if you do this, you are likely to scratch them or to permanently damage its finish.

Some silver coins may have milk stains

In some cases, despite the right protection, you may notice that your silver coins appear less attractive after a while. This is caused by milk spots: white or off-white stains that resemble milk splashes. These appear on the surface of your coin and may already be visible on newly minted coins. Most likely, these milk spots arise during production and it is believed this phenomenon is linked to the chemical residue left behind on the coin’s surface. The bad news is that these stains are not removable. The good news: milk spots do not cause the precious metal does to erode. Therefore, the silver value of your coin is preserved.

How do I protect my gold bars and silver bars?

In principle, you do not have to worry about buying precious metal accessories when you buy gold bars. In most cases, these are sold in packaging that offers sufficient protection. The same applies to silver bars. In the event that this is not the case, you can also opt for bar capsules for smaller bars. It is important to know that both gold and silver products are best kept out of direct sunlight. You should store these precious metals separately from each other, preferably in an airtight container.
