The first gold 1 Troy Ounce Mexican Libertad was minted in 1981. The Libertad is the third gold investment coin to be introduced to the market, only the gold Maple Leaf and the South African Krugerrand preceded it. The front of this gold coin depicts the goddess Victoria of the Mexican Independence Monument. The back of the coin holds the imprint of the Shield of Mexico.

Current 1 Troy ounce Mexican Libertads are minted in 24 carat (99.9% pure) gold. In the past Mexican Libertad gold coins had a purity of 90% gold and 10% silver. In 1991 the Mexican Mint added two new currency weights of 1/10 ounce and 1/20 ounce. Today, this gold coin is minted in a total of five different weights.
