The one Troy ounce Britannia investment coin was first produced in Britain in 1987 by the Royal Mint. The coin has a gold content of 22 carats (91.67%). One troy ounce Britannia coins have a face value of one hundred pounds sterling and contain one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of gold.

Gold Britannia is the first official gold bullion coin of the United Kingdom and is also the oldest European investment currency. Until the year 2000 the coins design always featured 'Britannia', the female personification of Britain on its face. Since 2001 a different design has been used on odd years.
