1 Oz Britannia 2021 gold coin

The 1 Oz Britannia 2021 is Britain’s first gold investment coin. It was first minted in 1987 and is also noted for being the first gold European investment coin on the market. Over the years, the Britannia has successfully held its own against other popular gold coins from all over the world and is now recognized as The Royal Mint’s flagship coin.

The gold Britannia coin is available in four different sizes and has been minted in 999.9 (24 carat) gold. Up until 2012 the coin had a purity of 916.7/1000. Between 1987 and 1989 the Britannia was produced in an alloy of gold and copper. From 1990 this was changed to an alloy of gold and silver. Additionally, The Royal Mint has continued to add safety features to the coin’s design, making the gold Britannia virtually impossible to reproduce.

The design of this gold coin honours the traditional image of Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain. She is depicted with her hair blowing in the wind and a shield in her hand – a design by Philip Nathan.
