1/2 oz. Gold Maple Leaf coins are minted by the Royal Canadian Mint. Up until the Gold Maple leaf was introduced in 1979, the South African Krugerrand constituted the only bullion coin on the market. However, importing the coin was prohibited until 1994, due to the economic boycott of South Africa as a result of Apartheid. This was majorly beneficial to the Gold Maple Leaf and allowed it develop and become one of the most popular bullion coins in the world.
Features of the 1/2 oz. Maple Leaf bullion coin
The 1/2 oz. Gold Maple Leaf bears a portrait of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and a Canadian maple leaf, Canada’s national symbol, on the reverse. In between 1979 and 1982, the RCM struck Gold Maple Leaf coin with a purity of 0.999 and following 1982 coins were struck with a purity grade of 0.9999. 1994 constituted the only year 1/15 oz. coins were struck, the coins proved unpopular. Gold Maple Leaf coins have been struck in 1 oz. coins as well as 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 and 1/20 oz. coins.The 1/2 Troy Ounce has a face value of $20 (CAD) and is legal tender in Canada.
